V. Reflection Essay

Reflection Essay

English Communication (ENGLCOM) is a course that primarily focuses on the development of communicative competence in reading and writing in the context of academic, media, and other authentic texts. Time has been passed so fast, the school year will be ended soon. It is worth for me to keep a language portfolio at the end of term1 SY 2011-2012. I’m very proud to say that I have achieved the goal I set for grammar and reading, reflecting what I learned in this ENGLCOM course, First, I become a more effective communicator, though the term, I practiced and developed my analytical and critical thinking ability, and also I evaluated and reflected on my own writing work, at the same time, I applied grammar rules in my essay writing tasks, in order to improve my writing skills. Secondly, I’ve learned to be a creative thinker, in the writing process, the first step is to make a good outline, in order to organize ideas for clarity, conciseness, and coherence. This is the process of developing my critical and creative thinking. Thirdly, I become a reflective lifelong learner, though reading many books; I utilized reading and writing skills to accomplish my learning goals and objectives. And applied my learning in order to experience more social issue. I’ve broadened my language skills in this ENGLCOM course, I was able to learn how to use adverbials in a proper way, and how to avoid fragment and run-on sentences in writing an essay; and also Pronoun-Antecedent agreement and Subject-Verb agreement are one of the most essential points to be considered in writing a good essay. The students are required to master this lecture as the basic grammar topic.

On the other hand, I still need to improve some areas of the study, for example, how to use context clues while reading a long article or a book in order to understand the concept as a whole. This is a long-term practical exercise. I will keep on working hard, and improve my understanding and comprehensive ability. Actually, when I’m doing this portfolio, it’s a good way of summarizing what I’ve learned in this ENGLCOM course. In addition, learning English improves my sociability, I’m a kind of person who loves to interact and meet with new people, and then English will be of much use to me. This is because many of the new people that I meet most probably speak English.

All in all, the process of keeping a language portfolio in education is to enable students to manage their own learning as effectively as possible. Keeping an e-portfolio can offer many benefits for students. As its most basic level, an e-portfolio can provide a personal online space where students can gather, organize and store study-related material and access any resources that we need for our studies.
